Theme Rationale
The 2025 Annual Conference will explore the theme, “We Speak, They Listen: How Stories Transform Meaningful Policies.”
When social workers speak up, speak loud, and speak truth, they hold the key to influence meaningful change.
Once again, we must speak up. Since day one of our current President’s term, our nation has seen a catastrophic attack on the values of our social work profession. We have witnessed the upheaval of vital resources that support systems, communities, and the very people who sustain our country and our islands.
In the face of such challenges, social workers do not sit idly by. We enact changes on macro levels that are rooted in social justice. It is time to recognize the role social workers play as architects of policies and programs that contribute to an equitable, healthy, responsible, and sustainable society.
Social workers hear stories, tell stories, and are part of stories. These stories transform into academic articles, agency procedures, epidemiological reports, news editorials, poetry, art, policy briefs, laws, and legislative testimonies. The ability to use stories as an instrument for skillful advocacy is intrinsic to the profession of social work.
At this year’s conference, attendees will hear from speakers who have used storytelling as a tool to influence policy. These personal testimonials will illustrate the profound power that narratives can have on advocacy efforts and community change. Sessions will also highlight the impact policies can have on organizations, especially regarding direct services.
We invite all attendees to come prepared to engage in discussions focused on effective storytelling techniques and advocacy strategies. Our hope for the conference is to equip professionals with the skills to amplify their voices and effect change. We are excited to bring together social workers and health professionals in invaluable mentorship, learning, and networking. Join us in envisioning a future where our collective advocacy leads to systemic change.
Don’t forget to follow our conference hashtag, #WeSpeakTheyListen, to share your insights and experiences before, during, and after the event. We hope to see you there!
